1. Urgency

Urgency asks:

How painful is this problem?

Not how interesting.

Not how trendy.

Painful.

A low-urgency signal sounds like:

A high-urgency signal sounds like:

“This breaks our workflow every week.”

Those are different worlds.

Urgency is strong when the pain costs users something real:

  • time
  • money
  • customers
  • reputation

A small annoyance can be real, but it may not be worth building around.

Do not confuse emotional language with urgency.

Look for cost.

2. Evidence quality

Evidence quality asks:

How strong is the source?

One random comment is not enough.

It can start your research.

It should not end it.

Strong evidence usually has:

  • specific user language
  • repeated examples

  • recent activity
  • multiple independent sources

Weak evidence is vague.

  • 3: Several related signals from one source type
  • 4: Repeated signals across multiple threads, pages, or reviews
  • 5: Strong pattern across multiple source types with clear customer language

Evidence quality protects you from falling in love with one interesting post.

3. Frequency

Frequency asks:

How often does the problem happen?

Some problems are painful but rare.

Rare problems can still matter, especially in high-value markets, but they usually need stronger urgency or higher deal value.

For most early product opportunities, frequent pain is easier to validate.

Daily pain beats yearly pain.

Weekly pain beats “sometimes.”

A problem that happens often has more chances to trigger buying behavior.

Look for phrases like:

  • “every week”
  • “daily”
  • “constantly”
  • “again”
  • “every client”
  • “each project”
  • “whenever we onboard someone”
  • “every time we run reports”

These phrases matter because they reveal rhythm.

Products attach themselves to repeated workflows.

Score frequency like this:

  • 1: One-time or rare problem
  • 2: Occasional problem with unclear pattern
  • 3: Happens enough to be annoying
  • 4: Repeated weekly or tied to a recurring workflow
  • 5: Daily, core workflow, or unavoidable operational pain

A low-frequency problem can still be valuable.

But it needs to be expensive enough to compensate.

4. Existing behavior

Existing behavior asks:

What are people doing about the problem today?

This is one of the most important parts of the scorecard.

Complaints are cheap.

Behavior is stronger.

When people build workarounds, pay for imperfect tools, hire help, or waste time manually solving the problem, they are showing you the pain has weight.

Look for existing behavior like:

  • spreadsheets
  • scripts
  • manual exports
  • Zapier chains
  • internal tools
  • agencies
  • templates
  • consultants
  • switching tools
  • paying for bloated software
  • asking for alternatives

A workaround is not just a hack.

It is evidence that the user has already crossed the line from complaint to action.

Score existing behavior like this:

  • 1: No visible action
  • 2: Complaints only
  • 3: Light workaround or manual process
  • 4: Repeated workaround, tool switching, or paid alternative
  • 5: Clear spend, painful migration, or custom-built solution

This is where many “cool ideas” collapse.

Nobody is doing anything about the problem because nobody cares enough.

5. Market gap

Market gap asks:

Why is the current market not solving this well enough?

This is where competitor research matters.

A painful problem is not automatically an opportunity if the market already solves it well.

You need to understand the gap.

Common gaps include:

  • existing tools are too expensive
  • existing tools are too complex
  • existing tools are built for the wrong segment
  • existing tools lack one critical workflow
  • existing tools are too broad
  • existing tools are too enterprise-heavy
  • existing tools require too much setup
  • existing tools have bad onboarding

  • existing tools ignore a niche use case

A strong market gap is specific.

Weak gap:

“Current tools are bad.”

Strong gap:

“Current tools are built for enterprise teams, but solo operators need a lightweight version with transparent pricing and no sales call.”

That is a wedge.

Score market gap like this:

  • 1: Existing solutions seem good enough
  • 2: Differentiation is vague
  • 3: Some dissatisfaction with current options
  • 4: Clear underserved segment or broken workflow
  • 5: Repeated frustration with current alternatives and a visible wedge

Do not invent the gap.

Find it in the evidence.

6. Next action clarity

Next action clarity asks:

Can we define the next useful move?

This is underrated.

Some ideas sound exciting but are too foggy to act on.

A good opportunity should suggest a clear next step.

That could be:

  • interview five people from the segment
  • inspect three competitor pricing pages
  • analyze 20 Reddit threads
  • test a landing page
  • build a fake-door flow
  • run a concierge test
  • contact users who described the workaround
  • compare feature gaps across competitors
  • validate willingness to pay

If the next action is unclear, the opportunity is probably not ready.

Score next action clarity like this:

  • 1: No obvious next step
  • 2: Needs more definition before research can continue
  • 3: A general research direction exists
  • 4: Clear next research or validation step
  • 5: Clear next action with target segment, source, and expected learning

A strong opportunity does not need to be fully validated.

But it should know what happens next.

Use the score to rank, not to pretend

Scoring is not magic.

A high score does not guarantee success.

A low score does not mean the idea is worthless.

The score is a decision tool.

It helps founders compare opportunities with more discipline.

For example:

Numbers without notes are dangerous.

A score of 4 means nothing if nobody remembers why it got a 4.

Every score should include a short explanation.

Users describe the reporting issue as a weekly client-facing problem. Several mention manually rebuilding reports before status calls.

Existing behavior: 5
Multiple users are paying for a larger analytics suite only to use one reporting workflow. Two describe internal scripts.

Market gap: 3
The gap is plausible, but competitor research is incomplete. Need to inspect pricing and feature packaging across the top five tools.

This keeps the opportunity tied to evidence.

It also helps future you avoid re-litigating the same decision from scratch.

Do not average away the red flags

A total score is helpful, but it can hide problems.

An opportunity with high urgency and terrible evidence quality is risky.

An opportunity with strong evidence but no clear buyer may stall.

An opportunity with a visible market gap but no next action may become a research swamp.

Watch for red flags:

  • high excitement, weak evidence
  • many complaints, no existing behavior
  • strong pain, unclear buyer
  • interesting gap, impossible build
  • repeated signal, no willingness to switch
  • clear opportunity, no reachable audience

A good scorecard should not just rank opportunities.

It should expose why an opportunity might fail.

Score signals continuously

Opportunity scoring should not be a one-time exercise.

Markets move.

Competitors change pricing.

Customers complain about new things.

Old pains get solved.

New gaps appear.

A signal that scored low last month might become more interesting after a competitor removes a feature, raises prices, or moves upmarket.

A signal that scored high might weaken after deeper research shows users complain but refuse to pay.

Keep the score alive.

Update it when new evidence comes in.

A simple example

Imagine you are tracking customer conversations in a niche community for agency owners.

You notice repeated complaints about client reporting.

The raw signal:

Now score it.

The problem costs time every month and affects client communication.

Evidence quality: 3
Several related complaints in one community, but not enough outside sources yet.

Frequency: 4

Existing behavior: 5
Users mention spreadsheets, templates, manual exports, and paid reporting tools.

Market gap: 3
There are many reporting tools, but the complaints suggest they may be too bloated or expensive for smaller agencies.

Next action clarity: 5
Interview agency owners who mention manual reporting and compare pricing pages for reporting tools.

Total score: 24 / 30

That does not mean build the product.

It means the opportunity deserves more research.

That is the right level of confidence.

The point is better judgment

Founders do not need a giant research process.

They need better judgment under uncertainty.

An opportunity scorecard gives you a way to slow down just enough before you commit.

Not forever.

Not into analysis paralysis.

Just enough to ask:

“Is this real, or does it only feel real?”

That question saves time.

It saves code.

It saves roadmaps from becoming a graveyard of random signals.

Stop brainstorming. Start filtering.

The market is already producing signals.

Customers are complaining.

Competitors are repositioning.

Pricing pages are changing.

People are building workarounds.

Review sites are filling with frustration.

Communities are exposing pain in plain language.

The problem is not a lack of ideas.
